A return to the 1000-metre trip has enabled talented filly Kareela Queen to post her second victory from three starts in the I98FM Handicap (1000m) at Kembla Grange on Melbourne Cup day.
Kareela Queen began her career with a strong maiden win over 1000 metres at Nowra before the daughter of Antonius Pius didn’t quite see out the 1200 metres at Class 1 level at her previous outing on October 21.
Kareela Queen returned to her home track for her Melbourne Cup day assignment while her trainer Bede Murray engaged Grant Buckley to ride the three-year-old again.
Kareela Queen settled fourth for Buckley in the field of five while the leaders set a reasonable tempo in the early and middle stages.
Buckley pushed Kareela Queen through a gap between the front-runners rounding the home turn before she took control of the $22,000 event from the 200 metres.
Kareela Queen responded to two taps of the whip from Buckely before hitting the line well to score a comfortable 2-1/4-length win.
The terrific performance at Kembla Grange earned Kareela Queen a $12,250 winner’s cheque, taking her prizemoney tally to more than $31,000 from her three runs.
Congratulations to Kareela Queen’s owners – Murray Livestock Pty Ltd Syndicate (Mgr: E B Murray), I Whitby, M Martin & M Adams.
